Topics:

  1. Are We Defined by Our Performances?

  2. Why performances matter, but are not everything.

Sources (Read Before):

  1. The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life (summary of Erving Goffman's ideas)

    https://www.simplypsychology.org/erving-goffman.html

Goffman argues that social interaction resembles a performance, with people managing impressions much like actors on a stage.

  2. The Masks We Wear (TED Talk by Ash Beckham)

    https://www.ted.com/talks/ash_beckham_we_re_all_hiding_something_let_s_find_the_courage_to_open_up.

Explores the idea that everyone hides parts of themselves and presents different versions depending on context.

  3. Authenticity (Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy)

    https://iep.utm.edu/authenticity/

A readable introduction to what philosophers mean when they talk about being authentic.

Make some notes on interesting points. The point is not to quiz on the fine minute details (dates, names, etc)--you can read all, some, or none. Zero pressure to read all, especially if you do not have time. These sources are merely meant to be convenient ways to help inform your opinion and fortify/build it up, not lectures. You can (and are encouraged to) read other sources as well to further gather information and work into your worldviews.

Discussion Questions:

  1. You likely act differently with your closest friends than you do in a college interview. Is one version more "real" than the other?

  2. If a person consistently acts kind, generous, and honest, does it matter whether those behaviors come naturally or are consciously performed?

  3. Many important parts of life—leadership, teaching, public speaking, even confidence—can involve acting before feeling. We often criticize people as "fake," but would complete honesty in every situation would make society difficult to function?

We look forward to seeing you! Make sure to hydrate and enjoy the nice flat trail! Breakfast will be provided afterwards and will be announced on-site!

Fun run and breakfast today! I love this running path because the flat route makes it a bit easier to run and talk at the same time. Today's topic made me wonder whether the version of ourselves that comes out when we’re running with friends, like today, is actually different from who we are alone. Can we talk about that during the next run?

100%! Running basically burns through your mental bandwidth, so you can't overthink or filter yourself as much. The version of you on a long run is pretty much your baseline self without all the social fronting. That’s honestly a big reason why I run because it helps me stop worrying about what other people think of me and forces me to just be myself. Come to the next run so we can talk more.

Great run today! I really liked the discussion about how sometimes you have to act confident before you actually feel confident, because that seems especially true when you’re doing something difficult. Thanks for the run and breakfast, Phoenix!

You crushed it today! Honestly, forcing yourself to act confident before it feels real has gotten me through so many situations, so I'm glad that part of the convo made sense to you. Let’s definitely run it back soon!
